Miss Cate Avery FITI

Translator for well over 30 years, from German and Italian into English, specialising exclusively in patents.

Winner of the John Hayes Prize for Excellence in Translation 2020.

Degree in German and French from Oxford 1982; MA in German from Dalhousie University in Canada 1985. Translator since 1982; patent translator since 1986; Managing Director of Eiger Translations, a niche translation company specialising in patents and other intellectual property, from 1989 to 2000, including designing and delivering training in patent translation for employees and freelance suppliers. From 2006 to 2013, established teams of freelance translators for large-scale specialist projects with batched delivery. The emphasis was on attention to detail and strict observance of deadlines.

Now a freelance translator in patents and patent litigation. An enjoyable challenge of the job is to work closely with patent attorneys to ensure that terms and phraseology are as close as possible to what they would write themselves.

Joined ITI in 1989. Frequent speaker at ITI conferences, with a focus on improving customer service. Fellow of ITI since 2006.
