The ITI Wessex Regional Group (ITI WSX) serves the needs of working, student and retired translators and interpreters living in the Wessex region, which includes, but is not limited to, the core counties of Dorset, Wiltshire and Hampshire. It has existed for many years as a platform to organise social and professional events and comprises over 30 members who work with a wide range of language pairs and specialisms.

We arrange events roughly every couple of months throughout our region, including regular in-person co-working sessions in Southampton and Winchester, CPD workshops and discussions (both online and in person), tours of local cultural sites, walks, pub meals and other social events. Our members are encouraged not only to come up with ideas for events but also to run them!

On social media, we have a private Facebook group for members where we share best practice and post news about our group and the wider world of translation. We also have a public page on LinkedIn, where we publicise our group and share details of our events.

Our coordinator also keeps ITI WSX members up to date with events organised by other ITI networks and regional groups, such as webinars and training sessions.

In previous years, we have organised tours of Salisbury Cathedral, including ascents up the tower, kindly facilitated by one of our members who volunteers at the cathedral. We’ve also run a CAT tool workshop in IKEA, Southampton, held a couple of translation ‘mini-slams’ at members’ homes, held a panel session with students at Portsmouth University, visited the Bombay Sapphire gin distillery, held a treasure hunt in the New Forest and enjoyed lively meals at Christmas and at our AGM, that all members are welcome to attend.

If you’re new to the profession, you can apply for a grant as a contribution towards the cost of mentoring offered by other ITI networks and we also offer travel grants to those attending the ITI conference.

We have a constitution that formalises the purpose, roles and responsibilities within our group.

Joining us means that you get to meet other translators and interpreters living and working in your area. We are a very friendly group and welcome newcomers. Whether you are well-established or new to translation or interpreting, we’d love to welcome you to one of our events.

Membership costs only £10 a year with a reduced rate of £5 for student or retired members.

For more information and to apply to join us, please email our coordinator or our membership officer.
