Ghent University

The Department of Translation, Interpreting and Communication of Ghent University (Belgium) organises a Bachelor programme in Applied Language Studies that is strongly oriented towards translation and that lays the groundwork for three Masters degrees: one in Translation, one in Interpreting and a third one in Multilingual Communication. It is also possible to follow a teacher-training track in the Bachelor and the Masters.

Students are expected to have Dutch as their mother tongue and choose two other languages which they study to equal level in both the Bachelor and the Master programmes.

Third-year bachelor students spend one exchange semester abroad. An alternative study track (called AEL) allows students to spend two academic years abroad, one for each language.

The Department also organises a postgraduate (post-Master) course in Conference Interpreting and a postgraduate course in Computer-assisted Language Mediation. The PG course Dutch and Translation welcomes non-Dutch-speaking students who hold a Bachelors or Masters degree; it involves the study of Dutch and develops a range of skills in translation.

University of Liverpool

University of Liverpool

The Department of Languages, Cultures and Film at the University of Liverpool offers a range of undergraduate, postgraduate taught and research degrees in both modern languages and Film Studies.

Our undergraduate programmes in modern languages cover eight languages in a range of Single Honours and Combined degrees, with the opportunity to study up to three languages. All programme combinations include a year abroad.

We offer two postgraduate taught programmes in translation: the MA in Translation (covering Arabic, French, German, Italian and Spanish) and the MA in Chinese-English Translation and Interpreting. The MA in Translation allows students to study translation in up to two of the languages offered. The two programmes cover essential theoretical and practical aspects of translation as well as professional and technical skills, giving students flexibility in advancing their language skills while focusing on the specialisms that align with their career aspirations. Notably, students have the option to study an additional language at any level.

Our postgraduate research programmes – the MRes in Translation and PhD in Translation Studies – are ideal for researchers who wish to work independently on an original project under the guidance of experts in the field.

We also offer extra-curricular language classes in eleven languages through our institution-wide Open Languages programme.

University of Surrey

Undergraduate and postgraduate courses related to the language industries are offered within the School of Literature and Languages, by the Modern Languages section of the School and the Centre for Translation Studies (CTS) respectively.

Undergraduate programmes focus on communication and interpersonal skills, as well as the political, socio-linguistic and cultural/artistic context of the language areas students specialise in. Undergraduate students acquire valuable professional experience through their year-abroad programme (in their third year).

Our postgraduate programmes offer students the opportunity to specialise in translation, interpreting or both. CTS (founded in 1982) is a vibrant research and pedagogical centre, dedicated to the generation and dissemination of knowledge fundamental to the understanding of interlingual, intercultural and intermodal communication, through the prism of the ever-pressing responsible integration of human and machine translation.

Postgraduate students avail themselves of extra-curricular professional portfolio activities (e.g. external talks, online courses), intensive curricular training in translation/interpreting, joint university-industry projects and multilingual projects for Language Service Providers or the local community.

Both undergraduate and postgraduate courses benefit from state-of-the-art multimedia labs, interpreting booths, foreign-language resources (foreign films, media server), translation resources (professional subtitling and translation software, spoken language corpus, 3D interpreter training environment) and a well-stocked library.

The School comprises five major sections - Translation and Transcultural Studies, French, German, Italian, and Hispanic Studies - and a Language Centre offering linguistic training in Arabic, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese, and Chinese.

Students doing this course are equipped with the necessary theoretical awareness and practical skills to significantly enhance their effectiveness as translators and intercultural mediators, as well as with the critical skills for the language industry and the translation profession.

Our PhD in Translation and Transcultural comprises both a theoretical/academic route, demonstrating a significant and original contribution to the discipline, and a practice route, seeking to advance knowledge by means of submitting a translation and demonstrating critical awareness of the issues involved in it. Colleagues have expertise in a wide range of research areas, including cultural translation and transculturalism, literary translation, gender and feminist translation studies, women writers in translation, sociolinguistics, translation and publishing, history of publishing, sociology of translation, among others.
