Working as a freelancer in any profession has many advantages: you can choose your hours around family or personal commitments, work where you like and focus on the assignments that most interest you. But one of the downsides we often hear mentioned is the lack of a structured career path.

As a freelancer you don’t have a manager who will recognise and reward your achievements through a promotion, so how do you demonstrate to your clients that your career and your skills are developing? And without such a promotion, how can you justify increasing your rates?

That is where ITI’s new and clearly-defined Career pathway comes in. Whether you are just starting out or have been working as a professional for several years, ITI is here to support you every step of the way as you develop in your career. By progressing along the pathway as your skills and experience develop, you will gain recognition from the industry and your colleagues, giving you the confidence to value and be rewarded for your achievements, and to give you the impetus to start planning for your next promotion.

The ITI Career pathway

There are five membership categories on the Career pathway, from Student membership for those still studying, to Qualified membership for those who have established careers in translation or interpreting and are recognised for their expertise as highly skilled professionals.

If you are part of the diverse translation and interpreting sector but aren't working primarily as a translator or interpreter, then Affiliate membership of ITI enables you to network with fellow professionals and gain important insights into the industry at large.
