Support for qualifications in public service interpreting - new report published

The UK Government has published an Independent Technical Review of Qualifications and Experience Requirements for the Provision of Spoken Language Interpreting.

The report, undertaken between March and September 2022, reviews the technical qualifications and experience requirements for spoken language interpreters deployed on Ministry of Justice assignments. We welcome the default of Level 6 qualifications for key language roles in the new framework —an essential requirement that ITI as a member of PI4J (Professional Interpreters for Justice) has been calling for.

The qualification ensures that interpreters possess the comprehensive skills needed to handle complex legal terminology, understand court procedures, and maintain the highest standards of accuracy when working in court settings.

The new standards will come into effect in October 2026
