A whistle-stop tour of translating men’s clothes with Helene Tammik, translator of men’s fashion magazine L’Étiquette.

The session will examine how menswear traditionally differs from womenswear (language, visuals, cultural references) and consider historical and current influences on the way men dress – because when you’re ‘selling dreams’ like fashion, context is more crucial than ever.

The BFL Network, will also discuss some of the challenges of translating for men’s fashion writers and what a fashion magazine editorial team needs from a translator.

Participants will come away with a broad-brushstrokes overview of how we write about the male wardrobe, the evolution of the menswear market, and general current trends.

They’ll also gain a sense of the qualities you need to translate well for the men’s fashion niche.

About the speaker:

Helene Tammik is a French-to-English translator and copywriter who worked in London’s advertising world before pivoting to translation during a lengthy stint in Provence.

Her clients include fashion magazine L’Étiquette, jewellers Boucheron, fashion house Berluti, shoemakers John Lobb, Louvre Hotels Group and a roster of boutique agencies.

Helene held the contracts for into-English translation for Lyon’s Musée des Confluences and French tourism and economic development agency Vaucluse Provence Attractivité for several years, before they each had their translation budgets slashed by 30%.

She’s a Qualified Member of ITI and duelled with Juliet Baur in the 2021 Conference’s French-to-English Translation Slam. Helene was a winner in Chris Durban, Ros Schwartz, et al’s ‘Translate in Chantilly’ contest in 2015.
