When people talk about Italiannes, they tend to think about present-day Italy or the Italian diaspora.

However, little is known about the culinary contributions of Italian colonization outside academia. Not to mention the contexts of some regions close to Italy. Beyond the current Italian borders, a linguistic and culinary, but not necessarily political, Italianness has developed with special characteristics, as in Italian-speaking Switzerland, San Marino and, partially, Montenegro. Moreover, in the specific case of the coastal regions of Slovenia and Croatia, the link with Italy is also political.

Language and politics aside, which primarily means removing the Italian flag and the associations with the Italian nation state, is it really possible to speak of Italianness in these regions beyond the borders of the current Italian Republic?
