Do automatic subtitles help interpreters? Cutting-edge research findings and discussion.
As of late, the use of automatic-speech-recognition (ASR) tools by interpreters has been a topic of heated debates amongst professionals. How helpful and reliable are they? What are the performance benefits for interpreters, if any? Or does their use (and the potentially required monitoring effort) simply increase the cognitive load of the interpreter?
Researchers Tianyun Li (Shandong University) and Agnieszka Chmiel (Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznan) carried out an experimental study on this very topic with a focus on the impact of automatic subtitles on accuracy in simultaneous interpreting and on the interpreters' cognitive load. A paper with their findings was published in September 2024 in Interpreting - the International Journal of Research and Practice in Interpreting, and the ITI's Interpreters' Development Network is pleased that Tianyun and Agnieszka will also present and discuss their findings at this IDN webinar.
