Translating Graphic Novels: the art of facing challenges in speech bubbles
Are you a translator interested in graphic novels? Have you read V for Vendetta, Maus, Persepolis or Fun Home? Have you ever wondered what is involved in translating those books? This webinar will explore the art of translating works of graphic storytelling and the specific challenges of the process as a whole.
The session will focus on: which publishers produce graphics novels in translation and who works for them; the language of sequential art as a medium in which text and image go hand in hand; the different genres, formats and conventions; speech bubbles, onomatopoeia and punctuation; the main challenges when translating a work of graphic storytelling; how to structure the translation of a graphic novel; and editing, lettering and proofing.
Throughout the session, specific examples from different countries and genres will be presented, showcasing a wide range of challenges and possibilities.
About the speaker
Carlos Mayor is an award-winning translator specializing in literature, graphic novels, exhibition catalogues and children’s books. He has translated or co-translated into Spanish or Catalan over 400 titles by authors such as Andrea Camilleri, Thomas Hardy, Cesare Pavese, Beatrix Potter, Vita Sackville-West, Françoise Sagan, Saki, Edith Wharton, Oscar Wilde and Tom Wolfe, as well as six Nobel-prize winners: Albert Camus, Grazia Deledda, Rudyard Kipling, Doris Lessing, Toni Morrison and John Steinbeck.
He has won Italy’s National Translation Award, the Esther Benítez Award, the Astrid Lindgren Prize and the Antifaz Award to a whole career translating comic books. He started teaching translation in 1992 and has given numerous workshops and lectures on different aspects of the profession. He also writes about translation for several journals.
He started translating graphic novels in 1989 with Alan Moore and David Lloyd’s V for Vendetta, and since then has translated Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi, L’Incal by Jodorowsky and Moebius, and works by Chester Brown, Charles Burns, Catherine Meurisse, Joe Sacco, Art Spiegelman, Roberto Saviano, Tardi and Zerocalcare.
