The RussNet Book Club is back with its first Russian-language meeting of 2025, to be held online on Friday 25 April.

This time, the Club will dive into the fascinating world of Vasily Shukshin – also an actor, screenwriter and film director – who died in 1974. His short stories, which are rich in emotion and humour, remain popular for their vivid language and lively characterisation.

What to expect:

  • Discussion of Shukshin’s unique storytelling style and themes
  • How his characters reflect real village life, traditions and struggles
  • The mix of humour, drama and philosophy in his works
  • Comparisons with rural life in other countries… What feels universal, and what is uniquely Russian?

This is a great chance to practice your Russian, explore your love of Russian literature and share your thoughts in a friendly and engaging atmosphere.

The session will focus on one story, Чудик (Chudik). When you register, the host, Natalia Karlina, will provide a link to the text, which is only about 9 pages long – and she’ll recommend a few more stories for those who can’t get enough of them!

If you don't use Russian professionally but are a confident reader, do consider registering to receive the text and having a go… The session will be relaxed and you need only say a few words: all levels are genuinely welcome!

Please email Natalia to register and receive the Zoom link nearer the date.
