Principles of good writing: A practical look at editing for Spanish–English translators
This mini-workshop takes a closer look at the editing step of the translation process. Beginning with a short reflection on examples of bad writing, it will attempt to pin down some principles of good writing. The remainder of the workshop will be split into short blocks that will take a practical look at a number of these principles, examining some specific problems that arise in the translation and editing of Spanish-language texts. The explanations will be reinforced with short practical exercises from texts related to international development and foreign affairs, with participants invited to contribute their own examples to discussions. Overall, the workshop aims to make us more aware of the language we use in our translations and how we shape it during the editing process, helping us to develop a more hands-on approach to editing as a way of providing additional value to our clients.
