Biography

Fiona Gray MITI is a German to English translator and the director of Grayscale Translations Limited. She specialises in marketing and business texts and excels in the translation of relatively small pieces that require a dash of creativity and close attention to style. A passionate member of ITI, Fiona is the Coordinator of the ITI East Anglia Network, the Marketing Tutor on the ITI’s Setting Up as a Freelance Translator Course and a member of the Membership Committee.

Nicholas Nicou

Nicholas Nicou is a French, Spanish, and Greek to English translator specialising in the fields of medicine and sports. He is also a Visiting Lecturer at the University of Westminster, a B2B sub-editor, and co-founder of the Source 2 Target podcast (bit.ly/3EuUb8P). Rik Grant

Rik is presenting the session Transcreation.

With more than 15 years in the industry, Rik possesses an in-depth understanding of the machinery of global advertising, adaptation, amplification & strategy for the world’s biggest brands. After graduating with a degree in Japanese he first cut his teeth in a specialist Asian-language translation agency before moving to the Tag group in 2011. Since then he has expanded his knowledge of cross-media production and creative strategy and works to help brands realise their full potential, irrespective of linguistic or cultural boundaries. Rik has worked across every media discipline and sector with clients including Facebook, P&G, Amazon, Reckitt Benckiser, Adyen, Arla Foods, Coca-Cola, DHL, Heineken and Toyota. In his spare time, Rik is an avid street photographer, guitarist, Iaido practitioner and PowerPoint guru.

Lynn Everson

Managing Director, Lifeline Language Services Limited

As a professional linguist (MITI – French, MCIL - Spanish) with a Masters in Translation and trained as an Interpreter at the universities of Bath, Caen and Granada, Lynn founded Lifeline initially as a telephone interpreting service for international hauliers.

Today, the company has offices in Preston and France, offering F2F and remote interpreting plus translation, transcription, proof-reading, typesetting, subtitling and voice-over.  Lynn remains fully involved in project management and staff mentoring, using her languages on a daily basis in customer relationship management and strategic decision-making.

Cecilia Lipovsek AITI

Cecilia is presenting the session Working as a diplomatic interpreter.

Cecilia Lipovsek is a London-based diplomatic interpreter and owner of MULTILATERAL, where she provides international communication support to British and Latin American governments, businesses, and professionals.

Born in Buenos Aires, Cecilia has lived and worked on both sides of the Atlantic and, over the last decade, has interpreted for heads of state, ministers, governors, CEO’s, activists, writers, royalty, Nobel Prize winners, museum curators, and countless experts.

Cecilia has also published JUMP!, a business book created for interpreters, WELCOME!, a practical guide to diplomatic interpreting in the 21st century, and SMILE!, a five-dimensional approach to British-LatAm interactions.

Antonia Coleman

Antonia is presenting the session Working as a conference interpreter for international institutions.

Antonia Coleman works as a conference interpreter for the European Parliament and as a public service interpreter in the UK. She teaches interpreting at the universities of Bath and Westminster. Her interpreting languages are: English A/French C/Italian C, and she also translates from German to English.

Moira Monney

johnson communications

Moira Monney owns and operates johnson communications, which specialises in German <> English translations, copywriting, and digital marketing consulting for nutrition brands. She holds a degree in Foreign Languages applied to Economics and Law from Sorbonne Nouvelle University, Paris, a Certificate in Nutrition from the College of Naturopathic Medicine, London, and a Professional Certificate in Management from the Open University. A former Marketing Executive, Moira has gained practical insight into brand strategy, international marketing and corporate communications.

Moira’s dedication to helping fellow translators and copywriters create more successful businesses led to her initiating the Financial Success Summit for Translators, a yearly online event for translators and other language professionals to learn all about money and marketing. Her Business Co-working sessions are focused on helping women entrepreneurs build their businesses in a sustainable, stress-free way.

Sarah Bowyer

Sarah Bowyer is a legal and sports translator working from French and Spanish into English under the name Crossbow Translations. Following a degree in Modern Languages from Cambridge University, she practised as a solicitor at large, international law firms for almost ten years before changing career. She is passionate about promoting collaboration and connections within the translation profession and is the Business Mentoring Coordinator of the ITI French Network and Membership Secretary of the North West Translators' Network. Her work was recently recognised with the ITI Best Newcomer (Freelancing) Award in 2020.

Dr Miguel Bernal

Dr Miguel Ángel Bernal-Merino lecturers in translation and localisation at Universidad de Las Palmas de Gran Canaria in Spain. He was for years the director of the specialised Masters in Translation at the University of Roehampton in London. Dr Bernal-Merino believes passionately in the fundamental contribution that translators bring to all products and services in general, and to the creative sectors in particular. He has been working non-stop on video game localisation since 2006 also to raise awareness within the ever-growing Language Services industries as well as Academia, game development and global publishing. He knows that research into these topics improves education, localisation quality, player satisfaction, and Return on Investment for all involved. Dr Bernal-Merino was instrumental in the creation of the Game Localization Round Table and Game Global within the Language Services industry, as well as GDC's Localization Summit and the IGDA's Game Localization SIG within the Video Game industry. He is a practitioner, a sought-after speaker, PhD supervisor and localisation consultant, and has authored some of the key publications on game localisation. Dr Bernal-Merino supports research from all countries for he believes we must improve intercultural collaboration in our hyperconnected, globalised world.

Yolanda Tavera

Yolanda Tavera was born in Salamanca, Spain, where she studied a BA in English Philology and Literature. After graduating, she moved to London and completed various Interpreting and Management qualifications.

Discovering Interpreting changed her life and became her passion and career.

She first worked as a Spanish interpreter for a large north London NHS Trust and various private agencies where she developed her skills as a medical interpreter, working for physical and mental health services.

She then worked as an administrator, learning all operational processes within an NHS language support department. Later on, she became the coordinator, expanding all aspects of the service from outsourcing the in-house interpreters to developing a Community Interpreting course.

Yolanda is currently the coordinator of one of the only surviving NHS Interpreting Services in the UK, at Whittington Health NHS Trust.

Chang Su

Project Manager & Conference Interpreter, KUDO

Chang Su is a Conference Interpreter (Chinese, English, Spanish) and Project Manager at KUDO now based in London. After graduating from the University of Bath, he started exploring conference interpreting in a remote setting. Some of his clients include Malala, Bill Ackman, UNEP, UNESCAP, UNODC, Microsoft, etc.  He is passionate about new technologies in the interpreting industry and closely monitors how the industry is changing during and after COVID. As a Project Manager, he also has his own understanding of the dos and don’ts as a freelance interpreter.

Brooke Townsley

Brooke Townsley has 27-years’ experience of public service interpreting and translation and teaching interpreting and translation at undergraduate and post-graduate level. He has coordinated three European Union funded research projects into legal interpretation and translation, (Building Mutual Trust 1, Building Mutual Trust 2 (www.buildingmutualtrust.com) and Understanding Justice (www.understandingjusticeproject.com), and was a partner in the Qualitas Project (https://qualitas.old.ogpi.ua.es), on training and accreditation for Legal Interpreting and Translation in the EU.

A member of the Council of the Chartered Institute of Linguists (CIOL) and vice-chair of Council (2009-2011), and chair of the National Register of Public Service Interpreters (NRPSI) (2006-2011), he played a key role in the creation of the NRPSI in its current form. He is also a Fellow of the CIOL, a board member of the European Network for Public Service Interpreting and Translation (ENPSIT) and a member of the International Community Translation Research Group (ICTRG).

John Evans

John is presenting the session Working as a translator for the EU institutions.

John Evans is a staff translator with the Directorate-General for Translation – the translation service of the European Commission – working from French, Spanish, Portuguese, Polish, Lithuanian and Latvian. John has a BA (Hons) in French and Spanish from Cardiff University (1998) and a Postgraduate Diploma in Translating and Interpreting from Bath University (2000). Before joining the European Commission in 2005 he worked as a linguist in the UK civil service and as a staff translator for a United Nations agency in Switzerland.

Angéline Bottier

Interpretation Coordinator and Staff Interpreter, Amnesty International

Angéline Bottier is a conference interpreter working with French, English and Spanish, based in France. In 2021, she joined Amnesty International’s Interpretation and Multilingual Engagement Unit which organises multilingual meetings and provides interpretation services for the movement worldwide.
