Epsom and Ewell French Club talk

Translating a rap for a French railways TV commercial: we’re not just replacing words here, folks!

Chris Durban, an American translator living in Paris, will be in Ewell on 21 January to talk (in French) about the importance of reflecting cultural differences when translating something as culturally distinctive as a rap. She will look in some detail at a rap by the French-Rwandan rapper Gaël Faye, which Chris translated in a very tight timeframe for a new TV commercial launching the rebranding of France’s national rail company, SNCF.

This will be an informal, interactive talk, with plenty of opportunities to discuss the challenges and decisions that translators face. It’s also a great opportunity for anybody studying languages to find out more about how to get into the profession. Chris will no doubt also have views on whether or when she and other professional translators are likely to be replaced by AI.
